Democratic Services Officer

Full Time (Part time would be considered) – £26,421 – £30,296 per annum

Working as part of a small team, this role assists the Director of Legal and Governance with the efficient and effective administration of Council together with all necessary council committee meetings, sub committees, working groups and panel meetings in accordance with the requirements of the Council’s constitution, all relevant statutory legislation/regulations and guidance.  

We are looking for a new team member to provide advice and support to councillors in relation to governance, decision making and democratic processes as well as helping members with their personal development as a councillor.  Organising training and keeping the members online information area up to date is also a regular part of this role. 

We are looking for a someone who can provide effective and efficient administrative support in other areas such as ensuring that the register of member interests is kept up to date, logging and coordinating Ombudsman complaints, processing and coordinating assets of community value nominations and highway consultations

In addition to the main areas of work above these roles will also assist our elections team and Legal team at peak times.

About you 

The successful candidate must have political awareness with an ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters.  Good organisation, communication and written skills as well as an ability to produce accurate work to tight deadlines is key.  In addition, the successful candidates must be able to work flexibility as formal committee meetings are held in the evenings.  On average you would be expected to work one evening a week.

You will have:-

  • Demonstratable relevant administration experience in supporting committees, working groups, panels or similar.
  • Experience of drafting agendas and minutes
  • Good knowledge of local government decision making experience of working in a local authority and/or with councillor would be beneficial but not essential.

You will also either hold a current first aid certificate or have the ability to undertake the relevant training course as it is a requirement that the Council’s Democratic Services Officers to be nominated First Aiders.
