Overview

Volunteer School Appeal Panel Members – Wiltshire, United Kingdom

Contract type: Volunteer

Make a real difference for children and families in Wiltshire

Do you have some spare time and a desire to give back to your community? Are you passionate about education and opportunities for children?

If so, we’d love to hear from you!

Wiltshire Council is recruiting volunteers to join our Independent School Appeal Panel. The panel considers admission appeals from parents and guardians when a school place has been refused; helping ensure that every case is heard fairly, openly, and with compassion.

Why volunteer?

As a Panel Member, you will:

  • Play an essential role in supporting a fair and open appeals process
  • Contribute to decisions that directly impact children’s futures
  • Gain new skills, confidence, and experience
  • Have social interaction and support your local community

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and life experiences. You don’t need previous panel experience, just the ability to listen carefully, consider information thoughtfully, and follow due process.

What can you expect?

  • Comprehensive training before you begin, plus refresher sessions
  • For each appeal, a dedicated Clerk to provide legal and procedural guidance
  • Appeals held entirely online via Microsoft Teams
  • A flexible, voluntary role with no minimum time commitment

Time commitment can vary throughout the year, from occasional hours to a few days a week during peak periods (May–July). Appeals are not held during school holidays. The role suits those who are retired, work part-time, or want meaningful voluntary work that fits around other commitments.
