About IOS

Barhale is one of three delivery partners within the Anglian Water Integrated Operational Solutions Alliance. IOS is a medium complexity, capital maintenance and enhancement, Civil and MEICA, design and build delivery unit working across Water and Water Recycling to support the successful implementation of the Anglian Water AMP 8 business plan.

Technical Manager

The Role:

The role of the Technical Manager is to hold responsibility for CDM Principal Designer duties for your designated programme of works. Ensuring successful delivery through planning, managing and controlling the delivery of design projects in the pre-construction phase within IOS by Barhale as the nominated Tier 1 Partner. Leading the Design Team engineers for your particular programme of works to develop innovative, efficient, technical solutions.

Supporting engineers with project scoping, identifying design delivery routes (internal or external), together with survey requirements. Develop with the Design Team, design plans and briefs to meet project objectives that are compliant with client, statutory and industry standards, regulations, and specifications.

Manage and monitor pre-construction design budgets and programmes, together with the evaluation of engineering solutions and designs. This is particularly important for external design work.

Ensure that safety, buildability & maintainability, and environmental best practice is achieved through design. Coordinating the permanent and temporary works design, ensuring design approval before construction.

Key Responsibilities:

 General

  • Delegated responsibility for the programmes CDM Principal Designer duties.
  • Design Leadership: oversee the design process from initial scoping (concept) with the Engineer to completion. Leading a team of design engineers and CAD technicians.
  • Design Planning: coordinate with the Planning Team to develop & maintain the design programme & resource availability within the Design Team. Feedback to the Project Engineer and Project Delivery Teams if there are concerns with the timelines.
  • Manage surveying: after initial scoping with the Engineer, identify survey requirements, e.g. topographic, 3D scans, trial holes, ecology and GPRS and coordinate with the Engineer to ensure that all pre-construction information is obtained.
  • Design execution: plan, execute and control engineering output including technical reports, process & mechanical calculations, drawings and specifications. Liase Design Manager to ensure design work is checked & signed off before construction.
  • Stakeholder management: coordinate with the Client, suppliers and regulatory bodies to ensure successful design delivery.
  • Standards: Ensure all designs are delivered to the correct standards and specifications.

Key Measures and Targets

  • Successful design completion on time and within budget.
  • Innovative designs using Anglian Water Standard Products or new technologies or products to protect the environment, e.g. nature-based solutions, re-use of existing assets or concrete alternatives.
  • Designs completed that reduce the health, safety and construction risks to construction teams, operations and the public through the Design Risk Assessment process.
  • Minimise disruption to the client and customers.

Essential

  • Experience in design/commercial and leading project teams
  • Degree/HNC in Civil Engineering, or equivalent
  • Good working knowledge of CDM regulations, Design Management.
  • Excellent communication, people, and team management skills, with the ability to influence, motivate and mentor
  • Ability to challenge designs and resolve problems to a conclusion
  • Ability to manage and deliver a successful project with minimal guidance

Desireable

  • Professional qualification and membership with a relevant industry body or institution
  • Have worked on general Water Recycling infrastructure projects.
  • More specifically, with Vacuum Sewerage systems.
