HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) ensures money is available to fund public services throughout the country and assist people with targeted financial support. With expanding amounts of intelligence and data, it is a very exciting time to join us!

Within HMRC, our analytical community offers a diverse set of opportunities from performing analysis to tackle tax compliance risk; identifying threats to UK PLC; and equipping our compliance colleagues with the data and intelligence needed to investigate and tackle avoidance of taxes and duties.

Compliance Operational Insight & Risking (COIR) is responsible for supplying upwards of 500,000 compliance interventions every year. This work helps HMRC reduce the tax gap, by targeting and directing our resources to combat tax fraud.

The COIR Production teams take raw data from bulk data analysis and Intelligence and turn these into intervention packages for delivery to our Compliance partners. The production teams capture data and analyse information from across HMRC. Identify cases to promote, prevent and respond to risk.

A technical background is not essential. If you are successful, full training will be provided.

Job description

Your duties may include some or all the following:

  • Use internal and external databases to find information and intelligence.
  • Review all relevant data to assist with decision making and carry out more detailed checks if required.
  • Using guidance and Standard Operating Procedures to achieve a quality outcome.
  • Review data, highlighting risks relating to non-compliance.
  • Consider the development of new and emerging projects and Taskforces.
  • Contribute to problem solving and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain good working relationships with Managers and colleagues across our production sites.
  • Work flexibly across multiple projects and taxes.

  • Role specific training to develop the skillset required. This will be a combination of online and on-the-job training and will commence from your start date.

Operation Delivery Profession

How to Apply

After submission of the first stage of your application, you will be invited to complete a Civil Service Numerical Test. If you successfully pass the test, you will be invited to complete the final stage of the application.

Sift

In the event of a large number of applications being received, an initial sift may be held on your CV.

At full sift all Behaviours and your CV will be assessed, with the successful candidate being invited to interview.

Interview

During the panel interview, you will be asked behaviour-based questions to explore in detail what you are capable of and you will be asked strength-based questions to also explore what you enjoy and your motivations relevant to the job role.

This is an example of a strengths-based question:

“It is often said that the customer’s needs should come first. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?”

There is no expectation or requirement for you to prepare for the strengths-based questions in advance of the interview, though you may find it helpful to spend some time reflecting on what you enjoy doing and what you do well.
