About the role: 

The successful post holder will work on a MoD funded programme of work focussed on large scale combat operations (LSCO). The project is delivered against three research questions, all of which focus on how best to support the Defence Medical Services with preparing for the mental health consequences of deployment to a LSCO:
 
  1. How can we accurately predict psychiatric casualty rates in a contemporary LSCO?
  2. What preparation or intervention can feasibly be provided at scale within war zones?
  3. How do we identify those likely to recover via early intervention versus those likely to require a longer treatment pathway?
 
The post holder will work across the work packages and be required to support & conduct (under supervision) systematic reviews, set up and support an expert stakeholder group, liaise with Defence Mental Health Services, support the project management of the programme of research, write and contribute to peer-reviewed publications, and write layperson summaries of research outputs.
 
This post is available at 50% FTE (17.5hrs per week) and will be offered on a part-time fixed term contract until 28th February 2030. The post will be based at King’s College London, Denmark Hill Campus for 1-2 days a week with the option to work from home for part of the week.   
 
The post holder will also be required to undergo additional MoD security clearance.
 
Research staff at King’s are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro-rata) for professional development. This entitlement, from the  Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, applies to Postdocs, Research Assistants, Research and Teaching Technicians, Teaching Fellows and AEP equivalent up to and including grade 7. About you: 

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience: 
 
Essential criteria
  1. MSc qualified in relevant subject area (e.g. epidemiology, statistics, psychology/military mental health, clinical psychology)
  2. Experience in a statistical techniques (e.g. descriptive statistics, regression analysis) & the use of statistics packages (e.g. STATA, SPSS, R)
  3. Experience in carrying out systematic reviews
  4. Experience in writing reports and papers for publication in high impact journals
  5. Interest in working with the Armed Forces Community and interest/understanding of military culture and mental health
  6. Experience in communicating with different audiences and presenting at conferences/seminars.
  7. Experience of writing lay person summaries 
 
Desirable criteria
  1. Experience of working in research within the Armed Forces Community
  2. Experience managing confidential/sensitive data with an awareness of GDPR and data governance.
  3. Experience of working / research in mental health
  4. Experience of working on research projects that have multiple research questions
