Job Title:  Pastoral manager

Responsible to: Head Teacher

Core purpose of the pastoral manager role:

  • To be a member of Wisbech School Leadership team and support staff who are responsible for students’ learning, welfare and good conduct
  • To focus on the prevention of exclusions and support those excluded or at risk of exclusion across the key stages
  • To promote and support the ethos of the school as a learning and caring community
  • To support all staff with any incident or report follow ups
  • To work independently and creatively, as well as alongside colleagues.
  • To create and maintain effective, positive and proactive working relationships amongst staff groups, within Education, Students, Parents/Carers, External Stakeholders, and Professional practitioners.

General Leadership Team Responsibilities:

  • To assist strategic/operational planning which supports the School Development Plan, Self-Evaluation Plan and the vision of the school.
  • To be available to respond to unplanned situations which arise in the daily running of the school
  • To model and lead in the maintenance of good student behaviour and to support staff, especially in dealing with sudden situations and emergencies.
  • To attend meetings of the Leadership Team and other school management meetings. 
  • To foster and support activities in the interest of the school
  • Develop a school ethos which enables everyone to work collaboratively, share knowledge and understanding, celebrate success and accept responsibility for outcomes.
  • Prepare with others an annual staffing review.

Key responsibilities: 

  • Support for Students
  • Provide pastoral support to students.
  • To establish constructive working relationships with students.
  • To provide support for distressed students, and record any relevant information.
  • To liaise with staff and provide the necessary information for a speedy induction of new students and the integration of those who have been absent.
  • To provide support, both academic and behavioural, for students.
  • To support students and other staff in the completion and improvement of their learning.
  • Support for the Teacher
  • To liaise with previous schools and other relevant bodies to gather student information to assist with admission.
  • To support the school’s Behaviour Policy including the school’s appearance/uniform policy and reward systems to establish a clear framework for positive behaviour.
  • To establish constructive relationships with parents/care providers, exchanging information and supporting home/care home to school links.
  • To work in conjunction with Site Lead when supervising students on outreach – providing reports/feedback on the progress and behaviour of students, and mentoring when appropriate.

  • To be aware of, and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
  • To be aware of and support difference and diversity and ensure all students have equal access to opportunities to learn and to develop.
  • To establish constructive relationships and communication with other agencies/professionals, in liaison with teaching staff, to support achievement and attainment of students.
  • To participate in appropriate meetings with colleagues and parents.
  • To participate in training and other learning activities as required.
  • To provide appropriate guidance and supervision and assist in the training and development of staff as appropriate.
  • To undertake planned supervision of students’ out of hours learning activities as required.
  • To supervise students on visits, trips and out of hours activities as required.
  • To support pupils on outreach or during times outside of the classroom.
  • To conduct supportive home visits and welfare checks.
  • To participate in performance management arrangements.
  • General duties
  • To take responsibility for maintaining your own continual professional development.
  • To attend and take an active part in full staff meetings.
  • To participate in appropriate meetings with colleagues and parents relative to the above duties.
  • To ensure strict adherence to the Group's policy on Child/Adult Protection by all staff and act as one of the establishment's 'Designated Safeguarding Person's’ in child/adult protection matters.
