The Role 

We are looking for a Lecturer in Technical Skills to join our team within the Department of Architecture on a fixed term contract until the end of July 2027.  

The role requires someone with the skills and ability to work closely with students to encourage their design development and to upskill their representational skills and craft. This role requires an ability to demonstrate the use of analogue and digital tools in the production of architectural and design representational work within teaching and learning content.  

The role will also contribute to the department’s aspirations to enable students that are industry ready, with the skills to succeed in contemporary professional practice.  

 

We are looking for someone with the skills and qualifications below to excel in this role: 

  • A degree in architecture or a closely related subject that requires clear design processes and methodologies 
  • Clear skillset of digital tools appropriate to the context of architecture and design industries 
  • The ability to draw by hand and articulate information to students in a clear and legible manner 
  • The ability and drive to enhance personal skills, keeping up to date with the latest technologies and tools within the context of the built environment 
  • Demonstrable knowledge of applying artificial intelligence tools in the context of the built environment to enhance design workflows and representational outputs 
  • The confidence to prepare and deliver demonstrations using current and innovative digital tools to level-up student’s abilities and technical skillsets within a dynamic and fast-paced environment. 

The main responsibilities of the position will be to: 

  • Work with the management team in the delivery of high-quality teaching, with a focus on representational skills and tools 
  • Develop content focused on specific analogue and digital methods to enhance student’s knowledge and skills  
  • Work as part of the team within the Department of Architecture to ensure dynamic learning environments for students 
  • Contribute to enhancing the skills journey of students within the department and the quality of portfolio and design work 
  • Promote the use of new and emerging technologies to augment critical thinking for learning, as applied through representational techniques. 

 

Key skills required for this position include: 

  • Knowledge of the context of architectural practice and design within the context of the built environment and wider construction industry 
  • Ability to work in teams and alone, as required. Communicate with members of the team effectively and deliver on-time in an organised and coordinated way 
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Ravensbourne’s values, culture and educational ethos and promote these through everyday practice in the role 
  • The ability to work with students to enhance their representational skills in a range of different formats from 1:1 discussions, to small groups and large classes 
  • Ability to help students to translate ideas into intentions through the production of their representational work, utilising creative and innovative techniques 
  • Work within Ravensbourne’s Code of Conduct and other Rules 
  • Comply with all legislative, regulatory and policy requirements (e.g., Finance, People & Culture) as appropriate 
  • Carry out the policies, procedures, and practices of Health & Safety in all aspects of the role. 

 

The Candidate 

The ideal candidate for this position is someone who has a background in architecture or related design subject, with strong representational skills across hand-drawing, digital design and model-making and is organised personable.  

  • Knowledge of current trends related to software and digital tools utilised in the built environment industry 
  • Cognizance of current architectural practice and issues impacting the built environment, more generally 
  • An ability and interest to acquire new skills and develop ideas in collaboration with others, including those within the team and university 
  • A keenness to work with others and contribute to enhancing student’s knowledge and skills within a Higher Education environment 
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and highly motivated to maintain positive communication, transparency and organisational skills to enhance the department.
