About us
The African Leadership Centre (ALC), King’s College London, is a dynamic unit based within the King’s School of Global Affairs that delivers postgraduate teaching, doctoral training and academic research. The ALC focuses on the intellectual study of leadership within the fields of development, peacebuilding and security with attention to Global South contexts. The Centre is committed to building a community of thought, policy and practice leaders and spaces for critical intellectual dialogues, debates and knowledge creation on its themes of focus. The ALC also has a base in Africa, with a sister Centre that is in Nairobi.
About the role
The ALC seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Leadership, Peace, Security and Development. The applicant will be an outstanding early career scholar with interdisciplinary expertise on the noted themes with empirical reflection on Global South contexts. The successful candidate will have an emerging track record of high-quality publications and an emerging research profile. They will carry out research production, dissemination and engagement through individual as well as joint research and will pursue research funding opportunities in line with this. The successful candidate will have an interest and/or experience in impact-oriented activities and engagement with relevant policy and practice activities.
The postholder will contribute to research-led teaching, use of innovative approaches to enhance teaching, learning and student experience, supervision and assessment. The postholder will provide academic and pastoral support to postgraduate students at the ALC. They will also serve as adjunct faculty on the ALC’s Fellowship programmes.
The Lecturer will themselves receive mentoring and support to further develop their skills and experience in academic administration and impact-inspired scholarship.
The lecturer will join an interdisciplinary team currently working in a wide range of fields including leadership, international political economy, development economics, international relations, gender studies, politics, climate studies, peace and security, regionalism, youth studies and education studies.

This post is fixed-term and will report to the Director, African Leadership Centre.
This is a full-time post, and you will be offered a 3-year fixed term contract.
About you
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- PhD qualified in relevant subject area (Social Sciences and/or Leadership Studies)
- Interdisciplinary expertise in social science subjects (including development, peace and security and leadership studies), with focus on Global South contexts, including Africa
- Evidence, including through publications, of research productivity at high global standards in their chosen field and an emerging research profile
- Experience of/interest in engagement with appropriate research communities, including on collaborative funded research projects, and research grant applications
- Ability to deliver innovative and effective teaching at postgraduate and/or undergraduate level (at the intersection of subject areas such as development, peace and security) and research supervision at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level
- Interest and/or evidence of teaching from critical approaches and perspectives that centre epistemic communities from the Global South, including Africa
Desirable criteria
- Focus in a research area/s that supplements current expertise
- Experience of networking and engagement with a variety of partners, including policy institutions, HEIs, etc towards impact
- Experience of offering pastoral support to students through tutoring and providing academic advice and enhancing student experience
- Relevant experience in academic and research administration
