About The Role
This is an exciting €4.8M project Supported by the
Global Health EDCTP3 and EU Horizon. The CARE-AFRICA project is developing an innovative AI-based tool to guide diagnostics and treatment of diarrhoeal diseases in children under 5 in sub-Saharan Africa, using a combination of local and globally sourced data.
The CARE-AFRICA project is developing and evaluating an AI-based tool to guide clinical decision-making, based on analysis of patient data entered by a clinician and automated retrieval of regional and national data on other factors likely to affect the risk of diarrhoeal diseases, such as environmental, climate, socioeconomic and demographic data.
The purpose of this role is to lead the development and application of advanced artificial intelligence, data-driven modelling approaches and to understand, predict and help control the emergence and spread of diarrhoeal diseases and antimicrobial resistance. The postholder will play a central technical and scientific role in the development of a DSS by integrating large-scale genomic, clinical, health records, biological, climate and environmental from EU and African partners.
The postholder will be responsible for developing and applying AI methods across the following areas, demonstrated through scientific publications or other academic/industrial achievements:
- Generative AI (text and numerical data; excluding image, audio, video generation)
- Agentic AI, orchestration, and adaptive systems (continuous feedback, dynamic reasoning, self-optimisation)
- AI methods for mining, classifying, and forecasting from heterogeneous data sources
- Spatial-temporal statistics/modelling from heterogeneous data (Bayesian hierarchical models, autoregressive models, random fields)
- Sequence/time-series modelling and language models, particularly transformer architectures
- Explainable AI methods
- Causal AI methods
This is a full-time post 35 Hours a week, and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 30 months.
