How you’ll make a difference

As a Principal Project Manager with transport and highways experience, you will deliver transformational change to transport and regeneration initiatives within South Gloucestershire. You will be responsible for day-to-day project management and supporting highway, public transport, active travel and public realm improvements.

Through a number of funding streams, South Gloucestershire has secured £100m to decarbonise transport, improve public transport, walking and cycling and drive growth productivity and regeneration through investment in infrastructure. 

What you will be doing

  • You will oversee the management of infrastructure improvement projects which support public transport, walking and cycling and create inclusive places, driving business case development, implementation and construction and coordinate work packages.
  • To achieve an ambitious work programme of major infrastructure improvements, you will collaborate with key stakeholders such as the Department for Transport, National Highways, West of England Combined Authority and elected members to agree priorities.
  • Managing multi-disciplinary project teams together with staff and contractors from other partner organisations, you will ensure that members, officers, partners and other stakeholders are briefed in a timely manner on project progress and budget control. 
  • You will work within a robust governance structure and provide accurate and timely reporting on the status of projects, driving programme assurance and governance.
  • It will be your responsibility to effectively manage the project budget and programme, ensuring the resolution and effective management of any risks and issues.
  • It will be key for you to provide expert and prompt advice to customers and partners on major issues so that effective customer relationships are established. 

What we need from you

  • It is essential that you hold a relevant professional qualification, degree or equivalent specialist qualification in project management and have experience of working on projects, with knowledge of project management practices and systems such as APM Level D or Prince 2. It would be desirable to have chartered membership of CIHT, ILT, RTPI or ICE. 
  • You will be an experienced project manager with a strong track record of multi-agency delivery, resolving complex issues and applying project management methodologies. 
  • We require you to have managed large-scale infrastructure, active travel, public transport and highway improvement projects in the UK.
  • Having an understanding and experience of UK highway rules and regulations, you will have a detailed technical knowledge of delivering infrastructure schemes to support public transport, walking and cycling and creating inclusive places.
  • You will have experience of transport scheme design, business case development and producing funding bids, with an understanding of the UK planning system, application processes and other statutory processes.
  • Having significant matrix management experience, you will have the ability to communicate effectively and develop team members, ensuring they are valued and understand their contribution to the council.
  • It is key that you have experience of UK local government structures, governance and reporting processes, having previously worked and negotiated with key political stakeholders and partners.
