Title: Lead Tutor (term time only, working 39 weeks a year)


Candidate must hold a teaching Qualification to be considered for the role.

Role purpose

To contribute to the achievement of Ambito’s educational outcomes by meeting the individual needs of students through teaching and allied practice and collaboration with colleagues.

To contribute to the high quality working practices of the senior leadership team and align these into each team at Lancaster, Blackpool, Barrow and South Lakes.

To work collaboratively with senior leaders and the Satellite Services Manager to provide high quality education and pastoral care for SEND learners.

Budget responsibility

Lead tutors have responsibility for operating a direct budget in conjunction with the Education Manager, Assistant Principal and Finance Manager.

The post holder must ensure the budget allocated to the satellite campus is maintained and allocated in the most effective way in the best interests of the service and the students.

The post holder is responsible for identifying additional expenditure where this is outside the direct budget and seek appropriate authorisation for this. The post holder must ensure that all Salutem/ Ambito policies related to budget and financial expenditure are upheld.

Management responsibility

The post holder is the operational manager for the satellite site and is the allocated point of contact of the site.

Lead tutors are responsible for managing all aspects of learners programmes and also the staff team.

Management responsibility can vary dependent on the number of students accessing the service at any time. Line management responsibility can consist of managing a tutor, learning support workers and student support workers.

To lead effectively and escalate key issues and questions as necessary and report to the Leadership Team accordingly.

Role specific

Satellite Management –The post holder is accountable for the day to day running of the satellite provision, by applying relevant health and safety legislation, the relevant requirements of the safeguarding of vulnerable adults and the principles of valuing equality, diversity and fairness; to ensure a safe and healthy teaching and learning environment and the delivery of high quality Beaumont College curriculum framework within the classroom and beyond into the community.

Satellite Provision – The post holder is accountable for the design, planning and implementation of individualised person-centred student study programmes, and the direct delivery of high quality teaching and learning sessions. They are also responsible for the oversight of the quality of delivery undertaken by other colleagues as part of the curriculum. This will include drawing on relevant information sources, including intake assessment and student protocols, to create high quality courses for students whereby they can achieve in a challenging but safe environment. In order to carry out this role effectively the post holder must have a current driving licence.

Curriculum Provision – The post holder is accountable for providing relevant and timely information to the Assistant Principal, Education Manager and Satellite Services Manager to inform the reporting and recording of student progress and achievement, curriculum planning and to fulfil the quality assurance cycle.

Line Management – The post holder is accountable for managing a group of staff to ensure the successful implementation of Ambito Beaumont College’s educational strategic plan. This will involve following Salutem’s policies and procedures.

Educational and Pastoral Tutor Role –The post holder is accountable for the delivery of outstanding educational outcomes and for the excellent support for pastoral welfare of the students within the satellite provision. 

Specific tasks assigned

Responsibility for managing the satellite college whole teaching and learning environment to ensure the curriculum offered is relevant, aligns with the pathways in the curriculum framework, is person centred and offers outstanding opportunity for students to progress and achieve within their own locality.

Contributing to transition processes by undertaking Initial Assessments, attending Student Path Meetings and Reviews and contributing to the setting of student Aims of Placement.

Setting Expected Outcomes for a caseload of students

Responsibility for the planning, delivery and assessment of learning programmes and sessions that meet the needs of each young person and their Aims of Placement

Responsibility for monitoring assessing, reviewing, recording and reporting on student progress in line with the curriculum quality cycle

Responsibility for completing and following risk assessments of curricular activities both in and outside of the college

Responsibility for ensuring therapeutic opportunities are embedded into students’ programmes

Responsibility for liaising with external services and agencies, students’ parents and carers on a day to day basis as agreed with line manager

Responsibility for contributing towards the Governors Report ,the on-going development of the Beaumont college website and the development of social networking through the line-manager

Contributing to the operational management of staff and deploying effectively to meet the needs the needs of the students

Leading the quality improvement and self-assessment activity within the service

Providing data to fulfil Salutem compliance processes and systems

Responsibility for the line management of a small staff team
